Abstract:
Deixis is a study about language phenomena which discusses words that
have a relative meaning. In this study, the researcher intended to analyze deixis
found on the caption of National Geographic Instagram Account. Based on the
problem statements, the objectives of this study are to identify and classify the
types of deixis found on the caption of National Geographic Instagram Account
and to describe the application in teaching grammar at the tenth grade students of
Senior High School.
This study belonged to qualitative study since the researcher analyzed the
captions of National Geographic Instagram Account published on June, 1st-7th
2016. The instrument of research was the researcher. The researcher used
documentation as the technique of collecting data for doing the research. The
researcher collected the data through five steps. After the data were collected, they
were analyzed through six steps.
In this study the researcher found 204 deixis in 130 sentences. According
to the analysis, the researcher found 77% person deixis, 3,4% place deixis, 6,4%
time deixis and 13,2% discourse deixis. The type of deixis most commonly found
on the captions was person deixis because these captions mostly contained reports
which described about participants in an event. There was no social deixis on the
captions since there were no sentences that show the social distinction among
participant roles in the sentence. The analysis of deixis can be applied in teaching
grammar at the tenth grade students of senior high school based on syllabus and
lesson plan of curriculum 2013.
