dc.description.abstract English is an international language. In Indonesia, English is the first foreign language which is taught in school. Therefore, there are four skills in learning English that must be acquired by students. Those are reading, speaking, writing and listening. Speaking is one of the four language skills that are very important in learning English, so the students must learn it. Besides, speaking is very important because the first purpose of learning English language is we can speak English language. However, in fact the students are afraid to say English word even they are in speaking class. Therefore, the method used by teacher must be appropriate for them. By using talking stick method, it can help to motivate the students in speak English. Besides, the students will get new experience in learning speaking and they will enjoy. The purpose of this research is to find out whether teaching speaking using talking stick method is effective or not in teaching speaking. In this research the type of this research belongs to quantitative research with pre-experimental research as it is design and one group pretest posttest as subtype of it. The sampling technique used Purposive Sampling. Then, for the instrument of this research is ‘test’ consists of one item. This research is carried out on 20th, 27th, 28th April 2016. In this research, the participants of the research are the seventh grade students of SMP N 6 Purworejo in the academic year of 2015/2016. The researcher took 32 students of one class as her sample from 192 students as population. Then, the researcher analyzed them. The researcher used t-test formula in order to answer the hypothesis stated. After doing the research, the researcher got the data both from pretest and posttest. In pretest, there were 32 students did the test given by the researcher. From the data, the mean of pretest is 66.38, the highest score is 80, and the lowest score is 54. In posttest, there were 32 students did the test given by the researcher. From the data, the mean of posttest is 68.41, the highest score is 81, and the lowest score is 55. Based on the data pretest and posttest, the researcher can see that the mean score of posttest (68.41) is higher than the mean of pretest (66.38). To see whether the hypothesis was accepted or rejected. The researcher used SPSS 16.00 for windows and the result of Sig. (2-tailed) was 0.001, and it was lower than 0.05. So, it can be stated that the hypothesis “the use of talking stick method in teaching speaking to the seventh grade students’ of SMP N 6 Purworejo in the academic year of 2015/2016 is effective” is accepted. en_US
