A STUDY OF MEDICAL VOCABULARY USED IN DOCUMENTARY FILM VICTORIAN PHARMACY AND ITS APPLICATION IN ENGLISH LANGUAGE TEACHING

Abstract

This study is aimed at discussing about medical vocabulary and how to teach medical vocabulary. Since English is the lingua franca of medicine and most scientific fields, it is important to learn English and medical vocabulary. The way to teach medical vocabulary using documentary film Victorian Pharmacy is the focus of this study. Victorian Pharmacy is documentary film which is shown in BBC in July 2010. It was made for BBC by independent production company Lion Television. The executive producer was David Upshal. It was filmed at Blist Hill Victorian Town in Shropshire. This film represents life in 19th century. It describes about how to cure and how to treat a disease or ailment. It tells about some substance that already known illegal or dangerous for this era. The results of this study are the classification of medical vocabulary used in Victorian Pharmacy film. This research focuses on the classification of the word and the way to teach medical vocabulary. There are 62 vocabularies found in Victorian Pharmacy film transcript. There are some types of word form, but in this study the researcher finds 3 categories. It consists of 53 nouns, 1 verb, and 8 adjectives. The classification of medical vocabulary abridges the students learn and comprehend English. It facilitates the student to make sentences or speak. The film itself assists the student to learn medical vocabulary blissfully. The combining of audio and video is useful for language teaching. Visual audio input and stimulate deeper comprehension. Teaching medical vocabulary to vocational pharmacy high school using Victorian Pharmacy documentary film is appropriate. The film is related with the habits of pharmacy students. The researcher found that Victorian Pharmacy film is the good media to facilitate teaching learning process for mastering English related to the student daily lives
