by the main character in Detachment movie and to describe the application of
speech function by the main character in Detachment movie to teach speaking at
tenth grade of Vocational High School.
In this research, the theory from Janet Holmes (2001) is used to help the
researcher categorizes the utterances in the script movie. The researcher applies
descriptive qualitative design of research to analyze the topic.
In this research, the researcher finds 521 utterances used by the main
character in Detachment movie. They are expressive (26 utterances: 5.18 %),
directive (67 utterances: 12.86 %), referential (382: 73.33 %), metalinguistic (1
utterance: 0.19 %), poetic 16 utterances: 3.07 %), phatic 28 utterances: 5.37 %).
The referential function is the most dominant type that used by the main character.
The reason of the main character in using referential function in Detachment
movie is because he as a teacher in this movie. He gives many explanations about
materials so he makes his students understand more about it by giving
information.
Speech functions of the main character of Detachment movie can be
applied in to the language teaching, one of them to teach speaking. In the
classroom the teacher must use appropriate speech functions. Suggestion for the
teacher is they should choose utterance properly that functioned to communicate
with the students or to explain the material, for the students must have good
response for the teacher about peech functions, for the future researcher it can be
used as reference to conduct future research with same title but different in
objective or methodology.
