Abstract:
This research is concerned with linguistic phenomenon, not cultural. The
objective of this research are to identify subtitling strategies used in cartoon film
entitled Bee Movie and applying subtitling strategies in cartoon film entitled Bee
Movie in language teaching.
This research is a descriptive qualitative research because it is aimed at
analyzing the subtitling strategies in cartoon film. The researcher makes a study
about the theory of subtitling strategies; especially based on Henrik Gottlieb’s
theory, collecting data by full watching Bee Movie and compared the English and
Indonesia texts of the selected movies. Downloading the English script of movies
from internet, identifying the subtitling in the cartoon film, reading te articles
related to this study, then comparing the English and Indonesia texts. In analyzing
the data the researcher finds the idea from the cartoon film that can be used for
improving vocabulary the students in English language teaching.
Based on the analysis, the outcome of this research indicated that all
Gottlieb’s proposed strategies were applicable to the cartoon film entitled Bee
Movie. There are ten strategies applied at subtitles. They are transfer, imitation,
paraphrase, deletion, decimation, expansion condensation, transcription,
dislocation and resignation. It was concluded that the cartoon film using different
strategies. The researcher hopes that this thesis will enrich the knowledge of
translation, especially subtitling strategies for the teachers and students who
should be able to improving vocabulary in teaching-learning listening activity.
