AN ANALYSIS OF IDIOMATIC EXPRESSIONS FOUND IN SUE MONK KIDD’S NOVEL THE SECRET LIFE OF BEES AND ITS APPLICATION IN ENGLISH LANGUAGE TEACHING

Abstract

This study was carried out for several objectives, those are (1) to find the form and meaning classification of idiomatic expressions found in Sue Monk Kidd’s Novel The Secret Life of Bees. (2) to explain the meaning of idiomatic expressions found in Sue Monk Kidd’s Novel The Secret Life of Bees and (3) to describe the application in English language teaching by using Sue Monk Kidd’s Novel The Secret Life of Bees. This research used descriptive qualitative because the data is in the form of words rather than number.The object of this research is the novel entitled The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd and supported by some reference books and websites related to this study.In analysing the data, the researcher reads the novel, collects the data and analyses the data by identifying and classifying the idiomatic expressions. From the analysis in the novel entitled The Secret Life Of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd, the researcher found that idiomatic expressions, based on their form, are classified into two categories, the fixed and non-fixed idioms. From the study it was found that among 119 idioms taken as the data, 48 (40.34%) idioms are of the fixed idioms and 71(59.66%) are of the non-fixed ones. Another classification applied to those idioms is classification based on the meaning, i.e. transparent or non-transparent idioms. Related to this classification, the researcher found that 73 (61.34%) idioms are transparent and 46(38.66%) idioms are not transparent in their meaning. And the researcher also searched the meaning from each idiomatic expressions. The Application of this study is the teacher uses a novel entitled The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd in English language teaching especially in teaching narrative text in the form of a novel.
