THE CORRELATION BETWEEN VOCABULARY MASTERY AND THE ABILITY TO TRANSLATE ENGLISH TEXT INTO BAHASA INDONESIA OF THE ELEVENTH GRADE STUDENTS OF SMK MUHAMMADIYAH PURWOREJO IN THE ACADEMIC YEAR OF 2013/2014

Abstract

This study is aimed at (1) describing students’ vocabulary mastery, to find out the level of vocabulary mastery (2) describing the students’ translation ability, and (3) determining the correlation between their vocabulary mastery and the translation ability. The population of the study is the eleventh grade students of SMK Muhammadiyah Purworejo in the academic year 2013/2014. There are 40 students. To take the data there are two test instruments, test of vocabulary mastery and test of translation ability. The data analysis techniques involve the descriptive analysis and shows that the students’ vocabulary mastery and the translation ability is in the good category. The result of product moment correlation analysis shows that there is a positive and significant correlation between the vocabulary mastery and the translation ability. This can be seen from the value of r observed (r-o) between students’ vocabulary and translate ability was 0.605. The r-o was higher than r-t 0.312. (0.605 > 0.312). There is a positive and significant relationship between their vocabulary mastery and translation ability.
