Abstract:
The goal of this study is to find the real condition of the correlation from
the student's mastery in vocabulary ability and their reading comprehension
ability. Moreover, the goal of this study is to obtain information and empirical
data on the effects of students' mastery in vocabulary and their reading
comprehension ability. This study was conducted and analyzed at the eighth grade
students of MTs Ma‟arif NU Sumpiuh in the academic year 2013/2014.
The populations of this study are 200 students and 40 students were being
the subjects of the study. This study was using experimental methods in
quantitative research by collecting the data from the instrument in the form of a
test. Test used by researcher in the form of multiple choice and text reading.
Researcher gave tests which amounts overall are 40 items, which consists of 20
items that form the vocabulary test and 20 items in the form of reading
comprehension test. In this study, researcher used manual calculations using
formulas and SPSS as a data computation.
The data obtained from this study were analyzed by using the Pearson
Product Moment Correlation Coefficient. When the level significant at 5% and N
= 40, then according to the results of statistical analysis and calculations found
that rxy is 0.605 and rt is 0.312. By comparing the value of rxy and rt was known
that was 0.605 > 0.312 and hypothesis says: if rxy is higher than rt then there is a
correlation and Ha accepted. If rxy is lower than rt then it means there is no
correlation and Ha rejected and Ho accepted. From the results of hypothesis rxy
was higher than rt, this means the alternative hypothesis was accepted. Based on
the findings of this study, it can be concluded that mastery in vocabulary
significantly affects the reading comprehension ability. Moreover by mastering
many vocabularies it means that students can easily to get information which
finally can enhance their knowledge by reading a lot of English books.
