Abstract:
using language. English is an International Language which is used in every
country. Everybody studies English so that they can communicate with others,
express their idea, get new information, express their feeling and so on. There are
four basic skills in teaching-learning English namely, listening, speaking, reading,
and writing. Writing is the most difficult skill to learn by Indonesian Students. In
learning writing skill, students need learning strategies as a way to master it.
Learning strategies are important for students to make easier in improving the
writing materials. There are many definition of learning strategies according to the
expert. In this research, there are four learning strategies according Oxford in
Ricards et all (2002:121-122). They are Cognitive Strategies, Metacognitive
Strategies, Affective Strategies, and Social Strategies.
The goal of this research is to know what are the learning strategies to
improve students’ motivation in writing class used by the fourth semester students
of English Education Program of Muhammadiyah University of Purworejo in the
academic year 2013/2014. In this research, the researcher took class C as the
sample that consists of 30 students, 25 students are female and 5 students are
male. In collecting the data, the researcher uses observation and questionnaire as
the instrument.
The result of this research are as follows: (1) Every student has different
learning strategies in improving writing skill. (2) According to questionnaire
result, learning strategies that most used by students is Metacognitive Strategies
with gradation score 0.97. The next ones are Social Strategies with gradation
score 0.90, Cognitive Strategies 0.87, and Affective Strategies 0.84.
