Abstract:
phenomena between teacher and students is produced. This study aimed at
investigating the classroom interaction types at grade eleven by using FIAC
(Flanders Interaction Analysis Categories) system and finding out whether or not
the English teacher performance have met the effective teaching based on Tripod
Students’ Perception Survey. FIAC system is a system that aims to measure the
classroom interaction which has 10 categories, namely (1) accepting feeling, (2)
praising and encouraging, (3) accepting or using ideas of student, (4) asking
questions, (5) lecturing, (6) giving directions, (7) criticizing or justifying
authority, (8) student-talk response, (9) student-talk initiation, and (10) silence.
While, Tripod Students’ Perception Survey measure the teacher’s performance
with 7Cs, there is (1) Care, (2) Control, (3) Clarify, (4) Challenge, (5) Captivate,
(6) Confer, and (7) Consolidate.
This study is qualitative research using observational design. It was
conducted in XI IPA 2 and XI IPS 5 in SMA Negeri 1 Kutowinangun. Class of XI
IPA 2 consisted of 31 students; 8 were males and 23 were females; whereas, class
of XI IPS 5 consisted of 31 students; 10 were males and 21 were females. The
objectives of this study is to find out the classroom interaction characteristics
based on the 10 Flanders categories and to find out the students’ perception
toward teacher’s performance using Tripod 7Cs Survey.
The results of the analysis show that the most dominant characteristic in the
classroom interaction is the teacher talk. It portrays that English teaching and
learning process was teacher centered. The performance of the teacher also meets
the teaching effectiveness based on Tripod 7Cs Students’ Perception Survey. It
was proved by the result of the questionnaire given to the students that reached
87.33% or very good category.
