Abstract:
English as one of the languages in the world has important role in modern
life. English is considered important to broaden knowledge, art and culture.
English becomes mediator that facilites people around the world who have
different languages to communicate and to share ideas, though, and experiences.
English as international language must be learnt by the people remembering it’s
function in global era and in the world’s society. In this research, the researcher
would like to know the correlation between students’ interest in reading and their
comprehension on narrative text at eleventh grade students in SMA Negeri 1
Sapuran, Wonosobo Regency.
This research belongs to quantitative research while the design of this
research is correlation design. In this research, The researcher has three questions
to answer. They are 1) how is students’ interest in reading?, 2) how is the
students’ reading comprehension? and 3) is there a positive and significant
correlation between students’ interest in reading and reading comprehension on
narrative text?. Then, The researcher also has three purposes to reach. They are 1)
to describe the students achievment in reading comprehension, 2) to describe the
response that the students’ interest or not in reading narrative text, and 3) to find
out whether or not there is a positive and significant correlation between students’
interest in reading and their reading comprehension on narrative text. The
population of this research is the eleventh grade students of SMA Negeri 1
Sapuran consists of 110 students, the sample of this research is XI IPS 2 with 30
students by using purposive sampling.
The instrument of the research are questionnaire and test. The researcher
got the data by using close ended questionnaire and reading test. Then, The
researcher did calculation both manually and by using SPSS program version 16.
Based on the computation, The researcher finds three things. First, the mean of
students’ interest in reading is 60.60 and it can be categorized as sufficient.
Second, the mean of students’ reading comprehension is 61.67 and it can be
categorized as sufficient. Third, there is a positive and significant correlation
between students’ interest in reading and their reading comprehension on
narrative text. And It is based on the computataion of r product moment with the
df 5 % and the amount of N = 30; So that r obtained is 0.802 and based on the
interpretation of the coefficient correlation.
