dc.description.abstract English is used as international language since it is used in international formal conferences such as OPEC, United Nations, G8, and many others. For that reason, the government of Indonesia has decided to make English becomes compulsory subject since elementary level up to university level because of the shortest goal is to prepare the students to face Asian Economic Community and to prepare them to face globalization era which require English as the main communication language. There are four basic language skills and in this research, reading narrative text is the main variable. Furthermore, the aims of this research is to find out whether or not using story mapping technique in teaching reading comprehension of narrative text is effective at the eighth grade students of SMPN 15 Purworejo in the academic year of 2015/2016. This study uses one-group pretest-posttest as its design and it belongs to experimental research. At the eighth grade of SMPN 15 Purworejo, it has 160 students and the researcher takes them as population. By using the purposive sampling technique, she takes one class that is class VIII C as her sample because from the information of the teacher, that class has difficulties in mastering reading skill especially related to the mastery of narrative text. Then, in getting the data, the researcher uses multiple-choice test as her instrument. The test consists of 30 items with 4 options. After gaining the data, she then did an analysis of the data in order to answer the statement of the problem. From the computation of descriptive analysis, it is known that the mean score of pretest is 70.41 which included in category good and the mean of posttest is 78.16 which included in category good based on the criteria reference scale of Arikunto (2013:245). Due to the data have normal distribution based on the computation of Chi-Square ( 2 value X < 2 table X (10.38 < 11.070 – Normal 5% and 12.99 < 15.086 – Normal 1%)), the writer uses parametric statistics that is t-test and from the computation of inferential analysis both manual using Ms. Excel and using SPSS, it can be known that the tobtained is lower than ttable (-5.924 < -1.999). The tvalue is negative, means that the first condition had a smaller mean than the second and so that the researcher comes to conclusion that using story mapping technique is effective in teaching reading comprehension of narrative text at the eighth grade students of SMPN 15 Purworejo in the academic year of 2015/2016. en_US
