dc.description.abstract Sometimes, English is difficult to learn, but one of the ways is improve our English. It is by song. A song is a composition for voice or voices, performed by singing or by musical instruments. Most English popular song use figurative language in their lyrics. Song lyric is a media to learn figurative language. Song lyric is meaningful. It can show us about figurative language. This study investigates the use of figurative language in song lyric entitled 21 by Adele and its application in language teaching. The aim of this study is to find out the types of figurative language found in Adele’s songs lyrics in the album entitled 21, to find out the meaning of each figurative language found in Adele’s songs lyrics in the album entitled 21 and to know how is the application of figurative languages in Adele’s songs lyrics in the album entitled 21 in language teaching. The researcher uses descriptive qualitative research because the researcher would like to describe the figurative languages in song lyric entitled 21 by Adele. Object in qualitative research is totally different from object in quantitative research. In writing this thesis, the researcher needs an object to study. There are many choices and alternatives. Each object has its own goodness. In this opportunity, the researcher makes an analysis of Adele’s song lyrics and the object of this research is figurative languages in song lyrics entitled 21 by Adele. The researcher takes the data from song lyrics entitled 21 by Adele. The researcher used documentation method to collect the data. He did the steps such as listening, searching, collecting, coding the data and classifying. After analyzing the figurative languages in Adele’s song lyrics, the researcher concludes that album 21 by Adele uses one simile (2%), ten metaphors (20%), four personifications (8%), one irony (2%), and thirty four hyperboles (68%). Overstatement (hyperbole) is the most dominant figurative language. The last is the applications of figurative language in song lyric entitled 21 in language teaching. Song lyric as a teaching media. The researcher hopes that this thesis will be useful for the students and the teachers. en_US
