Abstract:
This study aims to investigate the attitude toward English and their
learning achievement of the second grade students. This research was carried out
in SMA N 1 Petanahan in the second grade. The research sample is 53 students,
which consist of class XI IPS 1 and XI IPS 2 in the academic year of 2015/2016.
The data of the students’ attitude toward English which include by using the
attitude questionnaire while the data of the students’ English learning achievement
was obtained from the summative score of the student’s English achievement
from the English teacher of the school. The inferential analyses were calculated
using SPSS statistics version 16.0.
The main results of this research are (1) students’ attitude in English
subject at SMA N 1 Petanahan can be categorized as adequate level with
percentage 52.83% at the range 74 – 81 from mean attitude score is 76.70 and the
highest score is 88 and the lowest score is 67; (2) students’ English learning
achievement of XI IPS 1 and XI IPS 2 at SMA N 1 Petanahan can be categorized
as excellent level with percentage 71.7% at the range 80 – 100 from mean attitude
score is 82.40 and the highest score is 91 and the lowest score is 71; (3) the
correlation between students’ attitude toward English and their learning
achievement in English subject at the second grade of SMA N 1 Petanahan in the
academic year 2015/2016 is an adequate positive and significant attitude and
score of students’ achievement using SPSS statistics version 16.0 is 0.433 or
43.3%. It is higher than 0.266
