The Analysis of Masculine and Feminine Speech Style in Twilight Movie and Its Application in Teaching Speaking at The Eleventh Grade of Vocational High School

Abstract

Sociolinguistics studies the relationship between language and society. Sociolinguistics included how individual speaker use language, how people use language differently in different towns or regions, and how a nation decides what languages will be recognized in courts or education. Sociolinguists conduct research on any of those topics in one topic about many of different way. This research aims to describe types of masculine and feminine speech style by all characters in the twilight movie and describe the application of masculine and feminine speech style found in Twilight movie in Teaching Speaking. This research employed descriptive qualitative research. Qualitative research was used to emphasize on describing the phenomenon in its content by interpreting the data. Qualitative data were taken in the form of words (spoken and written) and visual images (observed or creatively produced). The Primary data were the utterances containing masculine and feminine speech style in Twilight movie. The data were supported by the context in which the utterances are spoken. Objects of this research were types of masculine and feminine speech style by all character. The steps of the data analysis were follows: 1). Observing the expression used in Twilight movie comprehensively, 2) Taking a note to any words, phrases, clauses, and sentences that contain masculine and feminine speech style, 3). Identifying masculine and feminine speech style, 4) Making percentage of the finding of masculine and feminine speech style in Twilight movie script, 5) Analyzing the data, and 6) Making conclusion based on the data analyzed. The result showed that there are seven types of masculine and feminine speech style all character in twilight movie: 151 utterance masculine speech style are Interruption 8 utterances (40%) Competitive Banter 7 utterances (35%) One Up 5 utterance (25%) and feminine speech style are Back Channeling 92 utterance (70.22%) Tag Question 6 utterancse (4.60%) Up Talk 8 utterances (6.10%) Hedges 25 utterances (19.08%). The application is result of masculine and feminine speech style in Twilight move using tag question in teaching speaking. The researcher hopes this thesis can make deep understanding in sociolinguistics especially masculine and feminine speech style.
