Abstract:
English is used as the first foreign language. Factors that affect the
increase of foreign vocabulary being Indonesian vocabulary is the development of
science, technology, arts, and culture. It is be the cause of increasing number of
foreign vocabulary that absorbed into Indonesian vocabulary. Vocabulary is one
of the important aspects in learning foreign language. The difficulty in
understanding the foreign vocabulary is caused by lack of the varied application
of learning strategies by teachers especially in learning vocabulary. Therefore, in
this research the researcher is interested to improve the students’ vocabulary
mastery using chain card on the eighth grade students of Junior High School of
MTs Muhammadiyah Argosari, Kebumen.
This research is called experimental research. The population of this
research is the eight grade students of MTs Muhammadiyah Argosari, Kebumen
in the academic year of 2013/2014. The researcher used VIII A which consists of
33 students and VIII B which consists of 33 students. The sampling technique
which is used is purposive sampling. The test consists of 35 items. Those are 10
test of completion, 15 test of matching, and 10 test of arranging. The researcher
conducted pre-test, and post-test. The researcher taught vocabulary using chain
cards as a treatment. Statistically, the researcher analyzed the data by using t-test
separated variance.
Statistically, the researcher analyzed the data by using t-test sample
related. The result of this research shows that there is positive and significant
effectiveness of teaching vocabulary mastery using chain card on the eighth grade
students of MTs Muhammadiyah Argosari, Kebumen. “Ho” is rejected and “Ha”
is accepted.. The mean score of the students’ vocabulary in the post-test is 67.88.
It increased from 56.12 in the pre-test result. In analyzing t-test formula, it is
obtained that the result of t-value is higher than t-table that is 2.723>1.998. The
research findings indicate that the chain card is effective in teaching vocabulary
mastery. Based on the result, the researcher suggested that English teacher should
use chain card as media in teaching vocabulary mastery in order to make students
easier in studying vocabulary.
