Abstract:
get some experiences. We watch film not only to appreciate it as an art, but also to get knowledge. We can learn about vocabulary, grammar, culture, etc. By watching film Freedom Writers, we can learn about characteristics inpiringb teacher and teaching method which is suitable and depends on the students need. We can learn people’s problem, so it may enrich experience in problem solving.
The objective of this research are to describe the characteristics of the main character, kind teaching method used by the main character, the relationship between characteristics of the main character and her teaching method used in Freedom Writers film script by Richard LaGravenese and the applications of the teaching method in language teaching. The research belongs to descriptive qualitative which does not use any statistical procedure. The technique used collecting data by taking the data found the film started from watching the film, identifying, classifying and selecting the data related to characteristics of the main character and teaching method and searching for references related to the subject matter. The researcher uses the film script of Freedom Writers and other resources including books and internet to support the data.
The result of the analysis shows that the characteristics of Ms. Gruwell as a teacher who optimistic, knowledgeable, smart, competence, sincere, tempathy, willing to sacrifice, good listener, motivator, creative and innovative, agent of change, on time and unclean person. There are three teaching methods used by Erin Gruwell that can be found in this film, those are Total Physical Response, Counseling Language Learning, and Suggestopaedia Method. The relationship between characteristics Erin Gruwell and her teaching method are she has the same characteristics of counselor in Counseling Language Learning, she was a creative teacher that needed in Total Physical Response, and she has a parent-children relationship that it is characteristics of Suggestopaedia Method. Counseling Language Learning method can be used applied to the language teaching in teaching speaking. The researcher hopes that this thesis will give advantages to the readers. It is expected that it can enrich their knowledge and experience.
