A STUDY OF PHRASAL VERBS FOUND IN VOA (VOICE OFAMERICA) ONLINE NEWS AND ITS CONTRIBUTION TO TEACH WRITING USING ENGLISH PHRASAL VERB IN SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL

Abstract

The study is concerned with phrasal verbs. These multi-verbs are formed from combination of a verb with an adverb or preposition. Phrasal verbs are an inevitable part of English language, so it is important to master this particular part of English grammar. This study is to find out the phrasal verbs found in VOA (Voice of America) online news including the kinds, the formulation, and the meaning of phrasal verbs. The reason the researcher decided to write this thesis on phrasal verbs and analyze them in VOA Online news is the researcher’s personal interest in studying phrasal verbs. As a student, we have a big problem in using phrasal verbs or understanding them in written text. This experience led the researcher to make an analysis on phrasal verbs which might be found in www.voanews.com. The researcher strongly believes learners of English can get more knowledge about the phrasal verb by knowing the typical and the meaning of the phrasal verbs, especially in written texts. The aim of this thesis is to find out the most common phrasal verbs used in news article found in VOA online news. The researcher chooses VOA because VOA is the leading news provider that provides huge information from over the world and it represents real language. Descriptive method is used in this study; therefore the data obtained from the research is in the form of words rather than numbers. The researcher decided to analyze the news by reading each article very carefully and highlighting phrasal verbs in particular article, classifying them and determining the meaning based on the theory used. The thesis is divided into a theoretical and a practical part. The theoretical part introduces phrasal verbs from theoretical point of view including the general review of phrasal verb, the grammatical of phrasal verb, origin of phrasal verb, and kinds of phrasal verb, while practical part outlines the analyses of the phrasal verbs found in the news articles. The result of the research shows that there are three kinds of phrasal verb found in the article, they are transitive phrasal verb, intransitive phrasal verb, and three-word phrasal verb. Each of phrasal verbs has different grammatical function and some of the verbs and the particles can be separated. These research findings can be implemented in the teaching writing through learning news item material for senior high school students.
