Abstract:
The objective of this research is to find out whether or not transformation
drill methodis effective in teaching direct and indirect speechat the tenth grade
students of SMA N 2 Purworejo in the academic year of 2015/ 2016.
This research belongs to quantitative research and it uses pre experimental
research as the design of the research. The number of sample is 32 students (class
X5) of SMA N 2 Purworejo in the academic year 2015/2016. The sampling
technique which is used is purposive sampling. The instrument that used to collect
the data is a test. The form of the test is devided into two two parts. Those are pretest
which is conducted on April, 19th 2016 and post test which is conducted on
April 28th 2016. The treatment is conducted on April, 19th (after giving pre-test),
26th, and28th (before giving post-test) 2016. To analyze the data, the researcher
uses t-test formula.
The result of the research shows that the mean score pre-test is 68.25, and it
is categorized as good. The mean score of post-test is 83.69, and it is categorized
as excellent. It can be seen that the score of post-test is higher than pre-test. Chisquare
obtained in pre-test is 7.24 and chi-square obtained in post-test was 7.76.
both chi-square of pre-test and post-test are lower than chi-square table (7.24 and
7.76 < 11.070).It means that the data distribution of pre-test and post-test are
normal. From the manual computation, it shows that the tvalue is lower than ttable (-
13.080 < -2.04). From SPSS computation, the result of the significant is lower
than the critical value (0.00 < 0.05). Therefore, from the two computations that
are used, the researcher concludes that hypothesis alternative is accepted which
means that the use of transformation drill is effective to improve students’
understanding at the tenth grade students of SMA N 2 Purworejo in the academic
year of 2015/2016.
