Abstract:
In learning second language, students will make some error and
mistakes in using language rules. It is not surprising because the rule of the
students’ mother tongue is different from the target language. Error is caused by
the competence factor. This means that the students have not understood yet the
linguistic use of the language. Error usually happens systematically and regularly
if it is not corrected. Error cannot be corrected easily and quickly because the
students do not realize that they have make error. The objectives of this research is
to find out the error faced by the students’ of SMAN 4 Purworejo in making
requests and questions.
The population of this research is the first grade students of SMA N 4
Purworejo. The researcher takes 64 students as the sample by applying purposive
sampling. In order to get data of the research, the researcher uses the written form
test as the instrument. The test focuses on request and question which has been
learned by students. To find out the data about the students’ errors and possible
causes of the students’ grammatical errors sentences in making request and
question, the researcher uses some steps: analyzing the students’ answers sheet,
identifying the grammatical errors of each student’s answer sheet, counting the
total number of errors made by the students, classifying the kind of errors of each
sentence by using surface strategy taxonomy, analyzing the possible cause of the
students’ errors sentences in making request and question.
The researcher concludes that there are four types of errors made by
first grade students of SMA N 4 Purworejo in making request and question. Those
errors are 109 omission (11.60%), 13 addition (1.38%), 389 misformation
(41.38%), and 429 misordering error (45.64%). There are two causal factors
which influence the errors made by the students. Those factors are intralingual and
interlingual factor.
