Abstract:
Reading is one of the basic skills in English that must be mastered by the students, besides writing, listening, and speaking skill. Narrative text is a kind of a text which amuse, entertain, and to deal with actual or vicarious experience in different ways. Index card match itself , is a method which is used to help students to improve reading ability in narrative text. The objectives of the study are (1) to know student‟ reading ability of narrative text of the eight grade students of MTs maarif Kaligowong in the academic year of 2013/2014 (2) to know the effect of using index card match in improving students‟ reading ability in narrative text of the eight grade students of MTs Maarif Kaligowong in the academic year of 2013/2014.
This research is conduct to get the data about students‟ reading ability in narrative text of the eight grade students‟ of MTs Maarif Kaligowong in the academic year of 2013/2014. The problems is “how is their reading ability in narrative text?” and “is there any effect of using index card match to improve the students‟ reading ability in narrative text?”. The kind of this research is experimental research. Th subjects of this research are the eight grade students of MTs Maarif Kaligowong in the academic year of 2013/2014. The number of students in this research is 21 students. The instrument used to get the data is reading test. The data analysis techniques are descriptive and inferential analysis.
The result of this research shows the data about students‟ reading ability in narrative text of the eight grade students of MTs Maarif Kaligowong include the good category, the mean score of reading test is 73. The result also shows that there is significant effect of using index card match in improving students‟ reading ability, the result of t-value is 3.73. Based on the 0.05 significant levels, the value of t-table is 2.021. the result shows that t-value is higher than t-table. Its means that using index card match to improve students‟ reading ability in narrative text is effective.
