Abstract:
The objectives of this study is intended to find out whether or not using
peripheral learning in teaching writing descriptive text at the tenth grade students
of SMK TKM Purworejo in the academic year 2015/2016.
This research belongs to quantitative research with post-test-pretest group
design. In this research, population is the tenth grade students of SMK TKM
Purworejo with the total number of population is 360 students and the sample of
this research is 70 students, from class XTPC as control group and XTPMIB as
experimental group. The researcher takes the sample by using purposive sampling
technique because of limited time. The researcher uses essay test to get the data of
writing text ability.The researcher analyzes the data by using descriptive statistics
to find mean, median, mode, range, standard deviation and variance, whereas
inferential analysis is used to prove the hypothesis test in the significance level
0.05.
The result of the data analysis shows that the mean score of pre-test from
control group is 58.31(good) and pre-test experimental group is 61.80(good). The
score is increasing 5.43points with the percentage of increasing is 15.51%.
Besides, the mean score of the mean score of post-test control group is 63.74
(sufficient) and the mean score of post-test experimental group is
73.43(sufficient). The score is increasing 11.63 points with the percentage of
increasing is 33.23 %.By comparing the mean score of both groups, it is clear that
the mean score of post-test from experimental group is higher the than the mean
score of post-test from control group. The increasing value of experimental group
also higher than the increasing value of control group. In addition, the result of ttest
based on the manual computation and SPSS 16.0 computation using
Independent T-test shows that the p-value (Sig. 2-tailed) is 0.00 at the 95%
confidence interval of the differences. It can be concluded that t-value 4.917 with
level significance 5% t-table is 2.00. It shows that t-value is higher than t-table
(4.967>2.00).It is significance because the Sig. (2-tailed) is lower than 0.05
(0.00<0.05). Based on the result of this research, it can be concluded that using
Peripheral Learning in Teaching Writing Descriptive Text at the Tenth Grade
Students of SMK TKM Purworejo in the Academic Year 2015/2016 is effective.
