English is an international language. Almost all of countries in the world
have applied English as a compulsory subject at schools. Therefore, there are four
basic skills in studying English that must be acquired by students. Those are
listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Writing is one of the four language skills
that are very important in studying English, so the students have to study it.
Teaching writing in junior high school is not easy. Even though the students have
studied the language for many years, they still have some difficulties to write
English text, especially descriptive text. Therefore, the teachers have to use an
appropriate technique for them. Brainstorming technique can help them to
generate their ideas and it can improve their writing skill.
The purpose of this research is to find out an answer whether there is
effectiveness of using brainstorming technique or not for teaching writing skill of
descriptive text of the eighth grade students of SMP N 33 Purworejo in the
academic year 2013/2014. In this research, the researcher takes 64 students as
sample. The researcher takes 32 students of class VIII A as experimental group.
Meanwhile, the researcher takes 32 students of class VIII C as control group. The
instrument to collect data is an essay test. The researcher conducts pretest and
posttest. The researcher uses brainstorming technique to teach writing skill of
descriptive text to experimental group and usual way to control group. The
researcher analyzes the data by using t-test polled variance statistically.
The result of the data shows that the result of t-value is 2.322. Based on
the 0.05 significance level, the value of the t-table is 1.999. The computation
shows that the t-value is higher than the t-table that is 2.322 > 1.999. It means that
teaching writing skill of descriptive text using brainstorming technique is effective
and gives a positive contribution toward the eighth grade students of SMP N 33
