Abstract:
The purpose of this research was to know whether the use of CIRC
method effective or not to improve students’ reading comprehension of the tenth
grade students of SMA N 10 Purworejo in the academic year of 2013 / 2014.
This research was a quantitative experimental research. The population in
this research was all of the tenth grade students of SMA N 10 Purworejo in the
academic year of 2013 / 2014. The number of population was 160 students, and
the researcher took 57 students as the sample by using purposive sampling. The
sample consisted of two classes, X.3 as the control group and X.4 as experimental
group. The researcher used pre-test and post-test in getting the data and then
calculating both of tests using 17.0 .
From the result of normality and homogeneity test, it could be concluded
that the distribution both classes were normal and homogeneous. For hypothesis
testing, the researcher used t-test. From the result, the t-value was 3.461 and ttable
was 2.000. It could be said that 3.461>2.000. The null hypothesis was
rejected and the research hypothesis was accepted. Based on the explanation
above, the researcher concluded that the use of Cooperative Integrated Reading
and Composition (CIRC) method in teaching descriptive text was effective to
improve students’ reading comprehension of the tenth grade students of SMA N
10 Purworejo in the academic year of 2013 / 2014.
