Abstract:
Writing is one of important skill in learning English. Writing skill still
difficult for junior high school. Commonly, it is because their vocabularies is law,
difficulty in using grammar correctly, especially in arranging the sentence
structure and understand the meaning of each word. Therefore, the media used by
the teacher must be appropriate for the students. By using series picture in
teaching writing can help the students to developing their knowledge, idea, and
also can increase their cooperation in teaching English.
The objective of this research is to find whether teaching writing using
series picture media is effective to teach writing or not. Population of this study is
the seventh grade students of SMP Negeri 1 KertekWonosobo in the academic
year of 2013/2014 that consists of 62 students. The researcher took two classes as
sample. They are class VII A as an experimental group and class VII D as a
control group. The researcher administered pre-test and posttest. She conducted
quantitative research. The researcher used series picture to teach writing.
Statistically, the researcher analyzed the data by using t-test.
After analyzing the data, the researcher concludes that teaching writing
using series picture media is effective. As the fact, the mean score of the students
who are taught by using series picture media is 77.16, and the mean of the
students who are taught without it is 69.87 and the result of t-value is 7.23 based
on 0.05 significant level, the value of t-table 2.00, the computation shows that tvalue
is higher than t-table that is 7.23>2.00. So, it can be stated that the
hypothesis “the use of series picture to improve writing skill on the students of
seventh grade of SMP Negeri 1 KertekWonosobo in the academic year of
2013/2014 is effective”.
The researcher suggested that the use of this media can be an interesting
way to teach writing. Hopefully this result would motivate English teachers to use
media in teaching English in their lesson, and the students can improve their
writing skill.
