Abstract:
is used to communicate one another. There are many speaking activities
that can be applied to improve speaking ability, such as: discussion, debate,
drama, role play, etc. The purpose of this research is to describe the level of
students’ speaking ability after being taught by discussion and to find out whether
using discussion is effective or not for teaching speaking. In this research, the
researcher has a question to be answered. The question is “Is Discussion Method
Effective to Teach Speaking at the Eleventh Grade Students of Madrasah Aliyah
Negeri Kutowinagun in the Academic Year 2013 / 2014.
In this research, the researcher took 32 students as the sample that is
XI.IPA.2. The researcher got the data using individual speaking test and speaking
through discussion. Then the researcher calculates the test result by using
manually and SPSS version 16.00. After analyzing the data, the researcher
concludes that teaching speaking using discussion is effective. As the fact, the
result of t-value is 19.75. According to the 0.05 significance level, the value of ttable
was 1.696. The computation showed that t-value was higher than t-table,
which was 19.75 > 1.696. The effectiveness of discussion method also can be seen
from score gained on pre test and post test. The mean score of pre test was 49.37,
it belonged to fairly sufficient category and the score on post test after getting
treatment was 73.25, it belonged to Good category. It can be concluded the score
after getting treatment was higher than before.
According to the result of t-test findings, it can be reference for teacher to
use discussion method to teach speaking to get higher students’ speaking
achievement. Therefore, it can be stated that the hypothesis “the use of discussion
method to teach speaking at the eleventh grade of Madrasah Aliyah Negeri
Kutowinangun in the academic year 2013 / 2014 is effective” is accepted.
