The Analysis of Phrasal Verb Used by The Characters in “The Martian” Movie Script and Its Application in Teaching Writing at SMA N 3 Purworejo in The Academic year of 2015/2016

Abstract

This study aimed at analyzing prasal verbs used by the characters in The Martian movie script. There are three objectives of the research namely: to find out the phrasal verbs and their types used by the characters in “The Martian” movie script, to find out the meanings of phrasal verbs used by the characters in “The Martian” movie script and to describe the application of phrasal verbs found in “The Martian” movie script in teaching writing. This research is descriptive qualitative research. The data form is taken from The Martian movie script. It is collected by signing the phrasal verbs which are spoken by the characters. After the data are collected, the researcher makes a list of phrasal verbs found in the script and analyze them. The result of data analysis shows that: the most frequently type of phrasal verb used by the character in The Martian movie script is type 2. It gets the highest percentage 36.3 %. Then, it is followed by type 3 with total percentage 34 %. Following type 3, there is type 1 with 20.5 %. Then, type 4 gets the lowest one with percentage 9%. The application of phrasal verbs used by the characters in The Martian movie script is to teach writing recount text. The indicator is students can identify the types and the meaning of phrasal verbs. Last of all, the researcher suggests to the teachers to use authentic materials like this movie script to maximize teaching process. For the students, movie script can be used to help them in understanding the types and the meaning of phrasal verbs corectly based on the context.
