Abstract:
The aim of this research is to know whether Gist Strategy is effective or not to teaching reading narrative text at the eleventh grade of SMA N 4 Purworejo in the academic year of 2015/2016. Moreover, the researcher also wants to know a positive contribution towards the students‟ reading narrative text comprehension after they were given Gist Strategy.
In this research, the researcher took two classes of the eleventh grade as the population and sample. Each class consist 27 students. The writer conducted pre-test and post-test. The researcher used Gist Strategy to teach reading narrative text. Statistically, the researcher analyzed the data by using t-test.
The result of this research showed that Gist Strategy was effective to teaching reading narrative text at the eleventh grade of SMP N 4 Purworejo in the academic year of 2015/2016. It was found that the result of t-value was 2.49. Based on the 0.05 significance level, the value of t-table was 2.021, the computation showed that t-value was higher than t-table, which was 2.49 > 2.021. Moreover, Gist Strategy was effective to teaching reading narrative text. It can be seen from gained score control group and experimental group which was given the treatment. The experimental group was higher than control group. Based on the result findings, it can be shown that the students‟ reading narrative text comprehension increases. Moreover, Gist Strategy was effective to teaching reading narrative text. By using Gist Strategy, the students are not bored in learning English and they are make easier understand content of the text.
