Abstract:
Language is social aspect of human life, a fundamental part of human in
society and in form of behavior. One of the functions of language is as an
instrument of communication. There are four basic elements that ought to be
improved in order to master English as second language. Those are listening,
speaking, reading and writing. English becomes a compulsory subject which is
not only learned in the junior high school, senior high school and university but
also learned in vocational high school as a skill to enter the working world, so
vocational students have to understand the English language. Therefore, using
systematically debate is an option. By using Australasian Parliamentary Debate,
the students are helped to learn to speak in a different and challenging situation.
The subject of the study is the eleventh grade students of SMK N 1
Kebumen in the academic year of 2015/2016. In this research, the researcher use
purposive sampling in taking the sample because of the limitation of time. In this
research, the researcher take 36 students of XI TN 2 as sample; they are
experimental group. The writer used pre-test and post-test, the researcher thinks
speaking using Australasian Parliamentary Debate as a treatment to the
experimental group. The test is conduct on May 2016. Statistically, the researcher
analyze the data by using t-test computation. After doing the research, the
researcher get the data both from pre-test and post-test. In pre-test, the highest
score is 85, the lowest score is 60, the median is 71, the mode is 71, the range is
25, and the mean of pre-test is 72.39. In post-test, the highest score is 92, the
lowest score is 70, the median is 83, the mode is 83, the range is 22, and the mean
is 81.58.
The researcher finding show that the mean score of post-test (81.58) is
higher than the mean score of pre-test (72.39). After analyzing the data, the
researcher concludes that using Australasian Parliamentary Debate is effective to
teach speaking. As the fact, the result of t-table is -10.558. Based on the value
table for n-1= 36-1 = 35, the value of t-table is -1.994. It can be seen that the
tobtained is lower than ttable (-10.558<-1.994). It means that the effectiveness of using
Australasian Parliamentary debate to teach speaking at the eleventh grade students
of SMK N 1 Kebumen in the academic year of 2015/2016 is accepted.
