The Effectiveness of Using Australasian Parliamentary Debate to Teach Speaking at the Eleventh Grade Studentsof SMK N 1 Kebumen in the Academic Year 2015/2016

dc.description.abstract Language is social aspect of human life, a fundamental part of human in society and in form of behavior. One of the functions of language is as an instrument of communication. There are four basic elements that ought to be improved in order to master English as second language. Those are listening, speaking, reading and writing. English becomes a compulsory subject which is not only learned in the junior high school, senior high school and university but also learned in vocational high school as a skill to enter the working world, so vocational students have to understand the English language. Therefore, using systematically debate is an option. By using Australasian Parliamentary Debate, the students are helped to learn to speak in a different and challenging situation. The subject of the study is the eleventh grade students of SMK N 1 Kebumen in the academic year of 2015/2016. In this research, the researcher use purposive sampling in taking the sample because of the limitation of time. In this research, the researcher take 36 students of XI TN 2 as sample; they are experimental group. The writer used pre-test and post-test, the researcher thinks speaking using Australasian Parliamentary Debate as a treatment to the experimental group. The test is conduct on May 2016. Statistically, the researcher analyze the data by using t-test computation. After doing the research, the researcher get the data both from pre-test and post-test. In pre-test, the highest score is 85, the lowest score is 60, the median is 71, the mode is 71, the range is 25, and the mean of pre-test is 72.39. In post-test, the highest score is 92, the lowest score is 70, the median is 83, the mode is 83, the range is 22, and the mean is 81.58. The researcher finding show that the mean score of post-test (81.58) is higher than the mean score of pre-test (72.39). After analyzing the data, the researcher concludes that using Australasian Parliamentary Debate is effective to teach speaking. As the fact, the result of t-table is -10.558. Based on the value table for n-1= 36-1 = 35, the value of t-table is -1.994. It can be seen that the tobtained is lower than ttable (-10.558<-1.994). It means that the effectiveness of using Australasian Parliamentary debate to teach speaking at the eleventh grade students of SMK N 1 Kebumen in the academic year of 2015/2016 is accepted. en_US
