Abstract:
English is an international language which is really important to learn. The
importance of learning English is that learners can learn to communicate.
Nowadays, English lesson started from primary school to the university.
Language is a system of communication used by the people to expression
something in life them. Vocabulary is the most important thing in learning the
language. Without vocabulary, we cannot speak, write and understand what we
read and listen. The objectives of this study is to find out whether the use of
Monopoly Game is effective or not to improve vocabulary mastery at the Seventhgrade
students of SMP Negeri 15 Purworejo in the academic year 2013/2014.
The researcher applied quantitative with an experimental method.
Sampling which researcher used was purposive sampling. The variable of this
research were the independent variable (X); the use monopoly game in learning
vocabulary and dependent variable (Y); in improving student’s vocabulary
mastery. The researcher used pre-test and post-test in this research as a research
instrument. The researcher taught vocabulary using monopoly game as a
treatment. In technique of analyzing data, mean and standard deviation are used in
the descriptive analysis, while test of normality, homogeneity and t-test is used in
the inferential analysis. To see whether the hypothesis is accepted or rejected, the
t-test is consulted to the t-table at the 0.05 significance level.
The main results of this research are (1) pre-test score can be categorized
as good level with M=70.75 and SD=7.63; (2) post-test score can be categorized
as excellent level with M=85.38 and SD=6.65; (3) t obtained value was 4.49, and
t-table was 2.000. It means that t-observed was higher that t-table. Thus, the
hypothesis showed that the use of monopoly game to improve vocabulary mastery
at the seventh grade students of SMP Negeri 15 Purworejo is effective. Based on
the result, it means that the hypothesis is accepted. The research findings also
indicated that the students are interested in learning English vocabulary using
monopoly game.
