The objectives of this research were to know the students writing ability in descriptive text of the tenth grade students of SMA N 1 Sapuran in the academic year of 2013/2014 and to find out whether word mapping is effective or not to improve students’ writing in descriptive text at the tenth grade students of SMA N 1 Sapuran in the academic year of 2013/2014. The population of this research is the tenth grade students of SMA N 1 Sapuran and the researcher took 60 students as the sample. As the experimental group, the researcher used class X Science 1 that consisted of 30 students and as the control group, the researcher used class X Social 1 that consisted of 30 students. Then, the researcher gave pre-test and post-test to both classes. The researcher taught descriptive text by using Word Mapping to experimental group and common way to the control group. In getting the data, the researcher analyzed the data used descriptive statistic analysis and inferential analysis.
After analyzing the data, the researcher concluded that teaching by using word mapping is effective to improve students’ writing ability in descriptive text. The mean score of pre-test of experimental group was 61.7, the post-test score was 71.4. The mean score of pre-test of control group was 61.1, and the post-test score was 647. As the fact the result of t-value is 4.696. Based on the 0.05 significant levels, the value of t-table was 2.048. The result of computation showed that t-value is higher than t-table, that is 4.696>2.048. Thus, Ha (Hypothesis Alternative) is accepted and using word mapping is effective to improve the students’ writing ability in descriptive text. So, it can be stated that the hypothesis “using word mapping is effective to improve the students’ writing ability in descriptive text at the tenth students of SMA N 1 Sapuran in the academic year of 2013/2014” is accepted. |
