dc.description.abstract English is one of the languages that is used widely in the world. People use it to communicate with other people from many parts of the world. There are four language skills which should be mastered in learning English, i.e. listening, speaking, reading and writing. Reading is one skill which is important in language teaching learning process. In fact, the requirements of effective teaching reading are not adequately met. The results, the students are low in reading comprehension. Therefore, teaching foreign language to young learners should be interesting and fun in order to make them like what they learn and improve their motivation in learning English. Picture series is one of media that could be used for teaching reading. The purpose of this research is to know whether or not using picture series effectivein teaching reading to the seventh grade of the SMP Negeri 1 Sruweng in the academic year of 2015/2016. The type of this research is pre-experimental research and it takes one group pre-test and post-test design as her research design. The researcher took the seventh grade of SMP Negeri 1 Sruweng in the academic year of 2015/2016 as the population of this research. By employing purposive sampling, the researcher takes one class as the sample to be analyzed, and the number of sample is 32 students. The researcher conducted pre-test and post-test. The researcher uses picture series to teach reading. Statically, the researcher analyzed the data by using t-test. After analyzing the data, the researcher concludes that teaching reading using picture series is effective. As the fact, the result of t-value is 8.609 based on 0.05 significance level, the value of t-table 2.039, the computation shows that tvalue is higher than t-table that is 8.609>2.039. So, it can be stated that the hypothesis “the use of picture series in teaching reading of procedure text at the seventh grade of SMP Negeri 1 Sruweng in the academic year 2015/2016 is effective. Based on the result, it means that the hypothesis is accepted. en_US
