Abstract:
English is an international language. In Indonesia, English is the first
foreign language which is taught in schools. Therefore, there are four skills in
learning English that must be acquired by students. Those are reading,
speaking, writing and listening. Speaking is one of the four language skills that
are very important in learning English, so the students must learn it. Besides,
speaking is very important because the first purpose of learning English
language is we can speaking English language. However, in fact the students
are afraid to say English word even they are in speaking class. Therefore, the
media used by teacher must be appropriate for them. By using comic strips, it
can help to motivate the students in speak English. Besides, the students’ will
get new experience in learning speaking and they will enjoy. The purpose of
this research is to find out whether teaching speaking using comic strips is
effective or not in teaching speaking.
In this research the researcher took 61 students as the sample. As the
experimental group, the researcher used class VII F which consist of 30
students. Meanwhile, as the control group, the researcher took 31 students of
class VII E. Then the researcher gave pre-test and post-test to both classes. The
researcher taugh speaking by using comic strips to experimental group and
taugh speaking in common way to the control group. The researcher then
statistically analyzed the data by using t-test polled variance.
After analyzing the data, the researcher concludes that teaching
speaking by using comic strips is effective. As the fact, the mean score of
experimental group is higher than mean score of control group (69.20>62.71).
To see whether the hypothesis was accepted or rejected, the researcher used
SPSS (Statistical Package for Social Sciences) 16.00 for windows and the
result of Sig. (2-tailed) was 0.015, and it was lower than 0.05. So, it can be stated
that the hypotesis “the use of Comic Strips in teaching speaking to the seventh
grade students’ of SMP Muhammadiyah Purworejo in the academic year
2013/2014 is effective” is accepted.
