Reading is one of language components which has a valuable attribute in
the development of science and technology because in reading we can acquire
new ideas, obtain needed information and broaden our interest. One way to
improve reading is considered by the strategies in teaching-learning process. One
of the strategies in teaching reading is by using Mix/Freeze/Pair. Mix/Freeze/Pair
is a strategy of learning where students work according to the step of
Mix/Freeze/Pair which give the students opportunity to play an active role
throughout the whole teaching learning process.
The purpose of this study is to find out whether there is any effectiveness
in using Mix/Freeze/Pair as strategy or not in teaching reading descriptive text to
the seventh grade students of SMP Nurul Mut’taqin Kemiri in the academic year
2012/2013. The type of the research is experimental research. The population of
this research is the seventh grade students of SMP Nurul Mut’taqin Kemiri in the
academic year 2012/2013. The sample of this research is two classes which are
divided into experimental group (VII B, 32 students) and control group (VII C, 32
students). The sampling technique is purposive sampling technique. The
researcher uses two variables. The independent variable is the using of
Mix/Freeze/Pair in teaching reading descriptive text and the dependent variable is
the score of reading comprehension test. In this research, the researcher uses pretest
and post-test to get the data. Between pre-test and post-test, the researcher
gave treatment by using Mix/Freeze/Pair. Statistically, the researcher analyzed the
data by using t-test separated variance.
The result of this research shows that there is effectiveness of teaching
reading descriptive text using Mix/Freeze/Pair, since it was found that the result
of t-value is 3.90. Based on the 0.05 significance level, the value of t-table is
1.671. The computation shows that t-value is higher than t-table, so it means that
the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted. The research findings indicate that the
students are interested in learning reading descriptive text using Mix/Freeze/Pair
strategy. |
