English is an international language. Almost all countries have adapted
English used as a compulsory subject at schools. Therefore, there are four skills in
learning English must be acquired by students. Those are reading, speaking,
writing and listening. Reading is one of the four language skills that are very
important in learning English, so the students’ must learn it. Teaching reading in
junior high school has not succeeded yet. Although students have learned the
language in the elementary school, they still have many difficulties to comprehend
reading texts. Therefore, the technique used by teacher must be appropriate for
them. By using Read Aloud technique help the students in comprehending
narrative text given by teacher. Besides, the students will get new experience in
learning reading and they will not feel bored. The purpose of this research is to
describe whether Read Aloud Technique is effective or not for teaching narrative
text at eight grade students of SMP Negeri 1 Sapuran Wonosobo in the academic
year 20013/2014.
In this research the population is 190, the researcher took 60 students as
the sample. As the experimental group, the researcher used class VIII A which
consists of 30 students. Meanwhile, as the control group, the researcher took 30
students of class VIII C. Then, the researcher gave pre-test and post-test to both
classes. The researcher taught narrative text by Read Aloud technique to
experimental group and conventional technique to the control group. The
independent variable of this research is the use of read aloud whch symbolized by
“X”,and the dependent variable of this research is students’ scores in reading,
which symbolized by “Y”. The reseacher then statistically analyzed the data by
using t-test.
After analyzing the data, the researcher concludes that teaching narrative
text using read aloud technique is effective. As the fact, the result of t-value is
8.405 based on the 0.05 significant level, the significant value is 0.00. The result
of computation shows that the significant is lower than 0.05, that is 0.00<0.05. So,
it can be stated that the hypotheses “the use of read aloud technique to teaching
narrative text at the eight grade students of SMP Negeri 1 Sapuran Wonosobo is
effective” is accepted. |
