There are two aims in this thesis. The first aim is to find out the forms of
register used in live text commentaries on UEFA Champions League 2014 Round
of 16 Match “Barcelona vs Manchester City”, while the second aim is to describe
the implementation of some registers found in ‘live text commentaries’ in
teaching writing to the tenth grade students of vocational high school.
In this thesis, the writer uses documentation as the technique of collecting
data. The writer looks for some live text commentaries from internet and decides
two live text commentaries from UEFA Champions League 2014 Round of 16
Match “Barcelona vs Manchester City” in the first and second leg that will be
analyzed. After that, the writer reads these live text commentaries carefully.
Meanwhile, in analyzing the data, the writer uses descriptive qualitative method
because the data produced are in the forms of words rather than number. The
writer takes some uncommon vocabularies from the ‘live text commentaries’ and
analyzes which can be called as registers.
The result of this thesis shows that there are forty registers found in the
‘live text commentaries’. Compounding words are the most dominant form of the
registers found (37,5%), word with 32,5%, derivation with 12,5% and borrowing
with 5%. There are also acronym, abbreviation, clipping, conversion and multi
processes with 2,5% for each. Moreover, some registers found in ‘live text
commentaries’ are used to teach writing to the tenth grade students of vocational
high school in the material of words and expressions used in expressing
preference and capabilities. Hopefully, this study will be useful for the teacher in
teaching English and also for the students who are concerned with writing subject. |
