The aims of this research are to describe the types of speech function of
tenth grade English teacher talk in the classroom, to describe the dominant types
of speech function of tenth grade English teacher in the classroom, to describe the
reasons of the tenth grade English teacher for using the most dominant type of
speech function at Muhammadiyah Vocational High School 2 Borobudur in the
academic year 2013/2014, and to describe the application of speech function of
tenth grade English teacher talk in the classroom to the Language Teaching.
In this research, the theory from Janet Holmes (2001) is used to help the
researcher categorizes the utterances in the transcription. The methods of
collecting data are observation, recording, and interview. To analyze the data the
researcher uses descriptive qualitative method.
In this research, the researcher finds 292 utterances of tenth grade English
teacher talk and finds some speech function indeed. They are expressive (6
utterances: 2.06%), directive (54 utterances: 18.49%), Referential (204 utterances:
69.86%), Metalinguistic (19 utterances: 6.51%), and Phatic (9 utterances: 3.08%).
The referential function is the most dominant type and the reasons of English
teacher for using it because she will make the students understand more about the
material, wants the students to be more active and to know their ability. Speech
function of teacher talk in the English classroom can be applied to the language
teaching in teaching speaking skill. In the classroom the teacher must use
appropriate speech function in their talk, the students must have good response for
the teacher talk, for the future researcher it can be used as reference to conduct
future research with same title, different objective and methodology. |
