The Analysis of Functional Expression Found in the Movie Entitled Legend of Guardians and Its Application in Teaching Speaking at the Eleventh Grade Students of Senior High School

Abstract

In this research, the researcher would find out and analyze the functional expression found in the movie entitled Legend of Guardians and its application in teaching speaking. The researcher has three objectives of the study: 1) to find out the kinds of functional expressions found in the film Legend of Guardians. 2) to find out the dominant of functional expressions in the film Legend of Guardians. 3) to describe the application of functional expressions in teaching speaking at the eleventh grade of senior high school. The instrument of collecting data is the researcher herself. In analysing the data, the researcher observes then watches the movie many times and reads the script of the movie. After finding the data, the researcher applies the way to teach functional expressions by using Legend of Guardians movie. Based on the result of the research, the researcher finds that there are 60 expressions including 7 kinds of functional expressions. Those expressions are 11 introduction (18.33%), 33 giving command (55.00%), 1 asking how to spell the name (1.67%), 1 apologizing (1.67%), 7 thanking (11.67%), 2 identifying and describing people (3.33%), 5 asking and giving information (8.33%). The dominant of the functional expressions in the movie is giving command expressions with 33 frequency (55.00%). The application of this study can be applied in teaching speaking in the eleventh grade students of senior high school in the first term. Teacher can use movie to teach functional expressions.
