The objectives of this research were: 1) to know the students’ ability of
speaking on storytelling, 2) to describe the kinds of students’ speaking problems
on storytelling, and 3) to find out the most dominant speaking problems on
storytelling faced by the eighth grade students of SMP Muhammadiyah Purworejo
in the academic year of 2015/2016.
This research was presented using descriptive qualitative method. The
research was conducted three meetings. The first meeting was on April 18th 2016,
the second meeting was on April 20th 2016, and the third meeting was on April
22nd 2016 at the eighth grade students of SMP Muhammadiyah Purworejo in the
academic year of 2015/2016. In this research, the researcher took one class
(VIIIE) as the subject which consists of 19 students. To collect the data, the
researcher used speaking test as the instrument of this research. In collecting the
data, the researcher did some steps. They were: preparing the research instrument,
giving test to the students, collecting the data by giving score of students’
speaking test, and analyzing students’ speaking test.
In analyzing the result of the test, the researcher used descriptive analysis.
The result of this research showed that the mean score of the students was 53.26.
It means that the speaking ability of the eighth grade students of SMP
Muhammadiyah Purworejo on storytelling was on poor level. The students’
speaking problems on storytelling were in aspects of grammar (21.62%),
vocabulary (18.92%), fluency (16.22%), pronunciation (29.73%), and
comprehension (13.51%). Then, the most dominant speaking problem on
storytelling made by the eighth grade students of SMP Muhammadiyah Purworejo
in the academic year of 2015/2016 was pronunciation with the total percentage of
29.73%. It can be concluded that many students in junior high school have
problems in mastering components or aspects of speaking, especially on
pronunciation. |
