Abstract:
Simple present tense is one of the four basic language skills that must be
taught in language learning. It is usually taught in integration with the three other
language skills. As one of the language skills, simple present tense is very
important for the students. However, in fact, the students do not have enough
capability to express their idea with English in grammar language. They often
face many difficulties in simple present tense. Therefore, the teacher has to help
the students in solving the simple present tens problems such as by using an
appropriate method in teaching-learning process.
The aims of this research are to find out students’ simple present tense
mastery and to describe whether the use of Transformation Drills method is
effective to improve students’ simple present tense mastery at the tenth grade
students of SMK Muhammadiyah Purworejo in the academic year 2013/2014.
The population of this research is the tenth grade students of SMK
Muhammadiyah Purworejo and the researcher take 68 students as the sample
which divided into two classes. The independent variable is the use of
Transformation Drills method in teachingSimple present tense, and the dependent
variable is the students’ simple present tense result manifested in the test score. In
getting the data, the researcher uses test as an instrument (pre test and post test).
The researcher analyze the data by using descriptive statistic analysis (mean,
modus, median, SD, and the highest and lowest score) and inferential analysis
(normality test, test of homogeneity and ttest as test of hypothesis).
As the result the use of Transformation Drills method is effective to
improve the students simple present tense mastery of the tenth grade students of
SMK Muhammadiyah Purworejo in the academic year 2013/2014. It can be
proven by the result of t-test that is 4.174. Then, the researcher consults the
critical value on the t-table using the 5% (0.05) alpha level significance and the
degree of freedom is 2.000. The computation shows that tvalue is higher than ttable
that is 4.174 > 2.000. Related to the result of t-test the mean of post- test is
higher than the mean score pre test (72.58>62.97). It means that Transformation
Drills method is effective to improve students’ simple present tense mastery at the
tenth grade students of SMK muhammadiyah Purworejo in the academic year
2013/2014.
