Abstract:
The objectives of this research are (1) to describe the students’ writing
ability in procedure text, and (2) to find out whether using demonstration method
is effective or not in teaching writing procedure text at the seventh grade students
of SMP Muhammadiyah Purwodadi in the academic year of 2015/2016.
This study belongs to Experimental research with pre test and post test
group design as the research design. To collect the data, the researcher uses test
essay as the instrument. The data is collected through writing test. The researcher
takes two groups, namely: experimental group and control group. In the control
group the researcher teaches using conventional technique, while in the
experiment group the researcher teaches using demonstration method. The
population of the study is the Seventh Grade Students of SMP Muhammadiyah
Purwodadi with the total number of the seventh grade students of SMP
Muhammadiyah Purwodadi is 60 students. The researcher takes only 40 students
as her sample.
From the test, it is known that the mean score of control group is 59.90,
and it belongs to sufficient ability in writing. While the mean score of
experimental group is 68.35 and it belongs to good ability in writing. The
computation result of t-test is 2.735. The result of computation value this being
compared to the at 0.05 significant level, the is 2.000. It is seen that
the computation result (2.735) is higher than (2.02) in the significant level
0.05. From the result above, it could be concluded that there is significant
difference in the achievement between the students who were taught using
demonstration method and students who were taught without demonstration
method. So, it could be concluded that the use of demonstration method is
effective in teaching writing in procedure text at the seventh grade grade students
of SMP Muhammadiyah Purwodadi in the academic year 2015/2016.
