Abstract:
In learning process, students still make errors and mistakes, especially in
writing. The students usually make errors in vocabulary and grammar. Making
errors and mistakes in writing is also done by the eleventh grade students of SMK
Batik Perbaik Purworejo, who learn how to write business letters. Therefore, the
researcher conducts a research by using descriptive qualitative approach about
grammatical errors in writing business letters made by the eleventh grade students
of SMK Batik Puworejo in the academic year 2013/2014.
There are two aims of this research. The first aim is to find out
grammatical errors in writing business letter made by the eleventh grade students
of SMK Batik Perbaik Purworejo in the academic year 2013/2014. The second
aim is to correct those grammatical errors.
In collecting the data, the researcher uses a written test. The researcher
asks the students to write business letter, exactly inquiry letters. Then, the
researcher collects the students’ writing. In analyzing the data, the researcher
corrects the students’ writing, finds grammatical errors, describes how to correct
those grammatical errors, and classifies those grammatical errors.
The result shows that there are 174 grammatical errors found in the
students’ writing. The errors are classified into four types of errors based on
surface strategy taxonomy: omission, addition, misformation, and misordering.
After analyzing the data, the researcher finds that there are 58 omission errors
(33.33%), 33 addition errors (18.97%), 77 misformation errors (44.24%), and 6
misordering errors (3.45%).
