The Analysis of Referring Expresion found in The Paddington Movie and Its Application to Teach Reading at Eleventh Grade of Senior High School

Abstract

This research deals with referring expression in Paddington movie. The objectives of the study are to find out kinds of referring expression contained in Paddington movie and to describe the application of referring expression in teaching reading at the eleventh grade of senior high school. This research is a qualitative research. The data source of this research is the manuscript and the dialogue from Paddington movie. In collecting the data, the researcher found the movie and the manuscript first. Then watched the movie and read the manuscript while list some dialogue which contain referring expression into its type. And then the researcher analyzes them and gives the reason why the dialogues are categorized as fulfilling referring expression. The result of the study shows that there are 1612 referring expressions occured in Paddington movie. 1254 (77.79%) data belongs to pronouns, 203 (12.59%) data belongs to personal names, 77 (4.78%) data belongs to definite noun phrases, and 78 (4.84%) data belongs to indefinite noun phrases.
