Abstract:
Writing is one of the skills of English in addition to speaking, reading
and listening. Writing must be completed by the student but writing has never
been easy. Most of students are getting difficult to write English due to English is
their foreign language. Nowadays, there are some students who have a good skill
in speaking but they can’t write English. Morever, they have difficulty to get and
to develop the idea easily. Brainstorming is one of the strategies to teach writing.
It can help the students to generate or to develop the idea. It is a way to get the
idea easier and faster. Considering the difficulties of student in writing, the
objective of this research is to know the effectiveness of teaching writing using
brainstorming strategy and to know what stages the researcher undergoes to hold
the brainstorming strategy in the classroom of vocational school students
This research took 36 students of the tenth grade students of SMKN 1
Karanganyar as a sample. The research belonging the quantitative research. The
type of this research is pre-experiment with paradigm one group pre-test and post
test. The first meeting was a pre-test, the second meeting was a treatment and the
third meeting was a post test. In view of the type of the research, the researcher
uses the t-test to analyze the data.
The result of the research shows that teaching writing using
brainstorming strategy is effective. Since, the result was proved by the result of tvalue.
The t-value was -2.236. Based on the 0.05 significance level, the value of
the t-table is -1.994. The computation shows that the t-value was lower than ttable
that was -2.236<-1.994. Moreover, there are many stages to hold
brainstorming in a classroom of vocational school students. The first stage is the
researcher makes a topic. Then, the students make the list of words about the topic
in a paper. Third, the students narrow down the list of words which are related to
the topic. Finally, the students use the words as the supporting details to develop
the topics.
