dc.description.abstract The aim of this study is to describe whether the use of Color Coded Co-op cards is effective or not in teaching simple past tense at the eighth grade students of SMP Muhammadiyah Purworejo in the academic year of 2015 / 2016. The type of this research is experimental research. The number of the sample is 64. The control group is 32 students of VIII F class, and the experimental group is VIII D class which consists of 32 students. The independent variable is the use of color-coded co-op cads, and the dependent variable is the students‘ grammar ability in simple past tense. The sampling technique which is used is purposive sampling. The instrument that used to collect the data is a test. The form of the test is divided into two parts. Those are pre-test and post-test. The researcher uses manual computation and SPSS 16.0 to analyze the data. The result of the research finds that the mean score of pre-test in control group is 64.38 and the mean score of post-test is 69.69. while the mean score of pre-test in experimental group is 65.38 and the mean score of post test is 77.25. Then the value of t-test is 3.271, and the value of sig. (2-tailed) is 2.000.
