Abstract:
Vocabulary is an important part of learning English. Due to the fact that
vocabulary is one of language component and that no language is exist without
word. The Jakarta Post science-technology article can be creative media to teach
vocabulary. It is media that implemented in SMA N 8 Purworejo especially at the
second grade.
This thesis is entitled “The Effectiveness of Using The Jakarta Post
Science-Technology Article To Improve Student’s Vocabulary Mastery at The
Second Grade of SMA N 8 Purworejo In The Academic Year of 2012/2013”. It is
aimed to find out the effectiveness of using The Jakarta Post science-technology
article as a teaching material to improve the vocabulary mastery of the second
grade students of SMA N 8 Purworejo and to know whether The Jakarta Post
science-technology article is appropriate or not to teach vocabulary.
This research is classified as an experimental research. The researcher took
60 students as the sample. As the experimental group, the researcher used class XI
IPA 2 which consists of 30 students. Meanwhile, as the control group, the
researcher took 30 students of class XI IPA 1. Then, the researcher gave pre-test
and post-test to both classes. The researcher taught explanation text by using The
Jakarta Post science-technology article to experimental group. The researcher
then statistically analyzed the data by using t-test polled variance.
The researcher presents the result of the research. She found that the mean
of pre-test is 66.67 and the mean of post-test is 81.83. The experimental group’s
total score in pre-test is 2000 and the total score in post-test is 2455. The result of
analysis shows that teaching vocabulary by using The Jakarta Post sciencetechnology
article was effective to make the students improve their vocabulary
mastery. The Jakarta Post science-technology article is appropriate to be used for
second grade of senior high school students in vocabulary class. It is proved by
the computation that value of t-test is 11.29, this value shows there is a significant
difference because the t-value is higher that t-table, that is 11.29>2.000. It means
Ho is rejected whereas Ha is accepted
