Abstract:
English is one of the languages that is used widely in the world. The people use it to
communicate with other people from many part of the world. There are four language skills
which should be mastered in learning English, i.e. listening, speaking, writing and reading.
Reading is very important skill. Teaching reading is requires some important factors to support
the classroom activities. To improve the reading comprehension for tenth grade students of SMA
N 10 Purworejo, direct learning discourse can be used as the supplement for the reading
materials. The discourse belong to authentic materials that allow the students to experience the
real instance of language use.
The aim of this research is to find out whether there is any effectiveness in direct learning
using discourse to enhance the reading comprehension for tenth grade students of SMA N 10
Purworejo in the academis year 2012/2013. In this research, the researcher took 33 students for
tenth grade students of SMA N 10 Purworejo in the academic year 2012/2013 as the population
and sample. The researcher conducted pre-test and post-test. The researcher used discourse to
teach reading. Statically, the researcher analyzed the data by using t-test.
The result of the research shows the direct learning using discourse is effective for tenth
grade students of SMA N 10 Purworejo in the academic year 2012/2013. Since in found that the
result of mean score from pre-test 64.3030 and mean score from post-test 69.2424. The
computation shows that t-value is higher than t-test that is3.147> 2.042.
The fact shows the direct learning using discourse is effective. Therefore, the researcher
suggests to the students that in relation to the development of their reading comprehension, it
will better for them to practice reading outside the classroom. It is also necessary for them to
improve their vocabulary mastery and grammatical competence independently. Discourse can be
used as the reading materials to improve the students reading comprehension independently since
the students can find them in their daily life.
