Abstract:
Factors that affect the increase of foreign vocabulary being Indonesian
vocabulary is the development of science, technology, arts, and culture. It is be the
cause of the increasing number of foreign vocabulary that is absorbed into
Indonesian vocabulary. Vocabulary is one of the important aspects in learning
foreign language. The difficulty in understanding the foreign vocabulary is caused
by lack of the varied application of learning strategies by teachers especially in
learning vocabulary. Therefore, in this research the researcher is interested to
improve the students’ vocabulary mastery using Jigsaw on the seventh grade
students of junior high school of SMP N 2 Prembun.
This research is found out the differences in vocabulary mastery between
the use of jigsaw in teaching vocabulary and without it and also the increase of the
students’ vocabulary mastery using it. The design of the research is Experimental
Research. The Jigsaw method is a cooperative learning technique in which
students work in small groups. The design of this study is to provide a treatment
of the application of the Jigsaw to guess the meaning of words in the experimental
class and without one to guess the meaning of the word in the control class. To
find the result of the research the researcher conducted the pre-test and post-test to
gain the information about the students’ frequency of vocabulary mastery as a
supporting data.
The Jigsaw method has a great role to improve the students’ vocabulary
mastery. It has been proved by analyzing the data from pre-test and post-test. The
mean score of the students’ vocabulary in the post-test is 75.32. It increased from
48.065 in the pre-test result. In analyzing t-test formula, it is obtained that the
result of t-test is higher than t-table that is 5.797>2.000. It proved that the
students’ vocabulary mastery improved after the researcher used Jigsaw method in
the teaching – learning activity on the seventh grade students of SMP N 2
Prembun in the academic year 2012/2013.
