Abstract:
English grammar is boring for some students because of the technique used in the teaching learning process. As we know the one of the purpose of learning English is how the students can communicate in real context. One of the ways to solve this problem is by using illustrated short story. By an illustrated short story in learning English grammar student have fun and relax. From the background, the researcher is interested in searching about the effectiveness of using an illustrated short story in learning English grammar at State Junior High School 20 Purworejo. The type of this research is experimental research. The number of the sample is 60. As the experimental group, the researcher uses class VIII A which consists of 30 students. Meanwhile as control group, the researcher takes 30 students of VIII B. The sampling technique which is used is purposive sampling. The instrument that used to collect the data is a test. The form of the test is divided into two parts. Those are pre-test and post-test. To analyze the data, the researcher uses t-test formula. The result of the research finds that the mean score of pre-test in experimental group is 64.93 and the mean score of post-test is 81.93. While the mean score of pre-test in control group is 59.33 and the mean score of post-test is 76.27. Then the value of t-test is 14.275 and the t-table is 2.00. The result of computation shows that the t-value is higher than t-table; that is 14.275 > 2.00 so it can be stated that the hypothesis “Using The Goat’s Secret; Illustrated English Short Stories to Improve Grammar Ability is effective” is accepted.
